Today Warner Bros. Pictures will release a new trailer for the highly anticipated Wonder Woman 1984 during the 24-hour DC FanDome event. During our visit to the film’s London shoot in August 2018, filmmakers, including director Patty Jenkins and producer Charles Roven, explained why the film should be viewed as a standalone movie that doesn’t have to be intertwined with the rest of the DC Extended Universe.
“We’re doing a second movie,” producer Charles Roven said bluntly. “We don’t want to call it a sequel because it’s so different. One of the things to watch out for is not to overcompensate. We always want to make it better, more interesting and exciting than we did before, and still have a taste of the first. This is a high bar, but you can’t let yourself be so afraid of that bar that you’re actually overcompensating. I guess that’s the hard one. ”
In Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice it was suggested that Wonder Woman had been hiding in the shadows of human society for decades after the death of Steve Trevor, but it was clarified by the Justice League that he DOES intervene when he is needed. Wonder Woman 1984 will reinforce this idea at the beginning of the movie, including a sequence where she breaks a skylight in a shopping mall to stop a robbery. She does it all with a blink of an eye and a smile that is not casual.
“It got involved in the Men’s World when it was needed,” said star / producer Gal Gadot. “He doesn’t want to have close relationships with anyone because he knows it will either hurt them because he will have to disappear one day or lose them because they will grow old. After the loss of Steve and the whole crew, I think Diana is somewhere happy where she is. Pretty lonely but decided to do it. It goes into the world whenever it is needed, but it is not complete, you know what I mean? They have problems. ”
Regarding how events in this movie preceding Man of Steel and other films that follow it will affect the larger DCEU and even the inevitable Wonder Woman 3, Jenkins insists that although he was the architect of DCEU, he was never taken into account. Geoff Johns wrote the script. However, it promised a few connections with the larger universe!
“Geoff is a great writer and a great partner and he doesn’t have an agenda like this in the bigger picture,” Jenkins said. I went to him and talked to him about this story, and we were both really excited to tell exactly this story. There are minor things, but these come secondary to the story. I’m not a big fan of making the second part of a seven-part story. This is not my jam. I feel like that can happen in the background, but every movie I want to make has to be its own great movie. So I have my own opinions on what his transcendence is, but this is the first story. ”
“Patty and I don’t know what will happen in the future because we don’t even know where it might go,” Roven added. He wanted to make sure that the character is in an independent universe so we can continue his character without having to knit other characters that could affect the way we make other movies. We wanted to make sure we could deal with his themes. After this movie, you don’t have to worry about anything. But Steve Trevor finished this movie, Diana had to deal with whatever happened to Steve Trevor from 1984 to 2017. You have to see where this movie goes at the end, right? All the events in this movie take place before ‘Justice League’, before ‘Man of Steel’. So you can look independently because they are irrelevant,
Of course this was all said in 2018, shortly after Justice League’s disappointment at the box office, and before the global success of Aquaman and the fan reaction that would ultimately bring Zack Snyder’s Justice League and Batfleck’s return in The Flash. . Could more connective tissue have been added to WW84 after this? Absolutely, but we’ll have to wait until the movie launches on October 2, 2020!
